A few years ago, stable and affordable game engines were rare. Fast forward a decade or so and now the problem is not scarcity but choice! Thanks to many resources, a small team or even one developer can go on to carve a legacy in the world of gaming! These are indeed exciting times!
GameEngine.Win classifies a Game Engine as an IDE which can generate a Game executable. This site will mainly cover software that can create and assemble game data and export it as a game. This includes software that:

Can be used to produce a complete game
To us, a Game Engine should support all basic components of game. We will shy away from specialized engines that solve only one problem such as rendering engines or physics engines.

Can output a game with minimal restrictions
Ideally, a developer can build games that are not tied down to specialized players or services (that another entity can control or revoke). If it can export a standalone game, it's good in our books!

Can be easily accessed by the average independent game developer
In-house proprietary engines, prohibitively expensive software and dubious products will probably be skipped.
